 Pie in the sky

« on: August 17, 2007, 12:37:50 AM »
I'm not entirely sure but my guess is that I'm not the only person to have ever come up with an idea -- what appeared to be a revolutionary, life altering, world changing idea--, expanded on it and on occasion even go so far as to commence implementing it.

** Rakuli recalls many a trip to the newsagency to buy fancy new pens and assorted stationary in an effort to flesh the idea out **

Maybe it's after the first hurdle is met, quite possibly it's after the hangover and if not then it's after the pseudo adrenaline rush wears off -- the one provided by a spurt of creative motivation -- but inevitably it happens, something grinds the think-tank to a halt and what were previously bright images in the mind fade to black. I would never go so far as to say that these forgotten brainwaves always had merit but upon revisiting some of these concepts I can see their potential in full contrast again. The problem I find is that when I see their possibilities I also remember too easily what it was that made me shelf the idea in the first place.

Looking back through history at some of the worlds greatest achievements shows me that the best things rarely come from the work of just one mind. One mind may lay the foundation but without a solid frame the structure will ultimately fail. An infinite number of end results can eventuate from an identical foundation. Galileo took an idea ( a simple sketch of a telescope) and was able to build on this idea to allow greater magnification, from this simple sketch he was able to study the skies and make observations on the Universe.

If it were possible to record your epiphanies before/during/after their inception, possibly lay the framework for an idea's evolution, provoke thoughts in others and find the load bearing beam that your blueprint is missing, the ideas may survive past the first hurdle.

My idea is to see Open Thource used for this purpose, for ideas to be made Open Source.

Thanks for listening,

Rakuli.

Seems like a logical enough idea Rakuli. What chance do you give it of actually having any success?

I think you might see most of your users posting in the funny board. Smiley

Hey hey Shyanne, you're the first person to write something on this whole website apart from me. I guess that earns you some kudos.

Chance of success? I can't really say what will happen with the site, hopefully will get a group of users that want to put their heads together and brainstorm.

I think you might see most of your users posting in the funny board. Smiley

Fine by me -- you will probably see most of my ideas end up there, I love nothing more than writing random nothingness in an attempt at humour, just hoping that people laugh at the one's that are meant to be funny. Wink

I must say good luck on this website, it's an interesting forum and something I felt worthy of reading. Getting numbers up will be the main issue though.

Thanks Joshwa, I am really glad that the philosphy I am trying to capture has prompted you to join and start reading the site. You're exactly right about the numbers, I really hope to offer the framework for an open minded community but not one full of ludicrous -- just because I can stop you -- rules, I really want people to have an outlet for their ideas, whether they be possible, impossible or just funny.

** Rakuli counts members **

7 members at time of writing -- this is 6 more than a week ago when I launched the site so hopefully this number will grow. Eventually the content should attract the minds, at this time I just have to rely of the philosophy.

Rakuli, a site like this can be a God-send for many bursting and bibbling with ideas.

Every day that I wake, I feel the fire within - and i know many are the same - this place could their haven.

As I tell my students - there are no such things as stupid questions or ideas

Hi Damien,

Welcome - it's great to see an SMF user here.

Every day that I wake, I feel the fire within - and i know many are the same - this place could their haven.

As I tell my students - there are no such things as stupid questions or ideas

I agree with you totally there - the fire will often be extinguished but there's no reason why that fire can't spread to someone else first. If you have an idea but never use it again then there's no reason someone else can't take it by the horns and develop it further.

I am still finding the hardest thing to sell is that regardless of whether someone thinks their idea stupid or petty, I won't see it that way...

Again welcome, I hope you enjoy the site.

I think we are designed to have that initial burst of crazy adrenalin-fueled energy to kick-start our idea, but it wears off after a short period so that we don't forget to eat, sleep and interact with society. It's almost like an infatuation- you're sooo in love for a week, and then after a couple of months it's old hat. Must be a survival reflex.

For our brilliant ideas to get anywhere, we need to set off the spark in another human, to receive a boost from their infatuation, and then another, and so on. I guess that's why we form clubs. If we can continue to inspire each other, then we will at least go in a direction!

Open Thource allows for ASAP inspiration, by allowing us to get our crazy energy out, when it happens (it can be particularly frustrating when the newsagent's not open at 10.30pm- but Open Thource is always open!)

No fancy pens, but you can make up with it with your fancy pants.  Embarrassed
Here's to domino-style inspiration!
